1 Weston Middle School Newsletter
November 3, 2011   Dear Parent/Guardian:   Wasn’t it Yogi Berra who coined the phrase, “It’s déjà vu all over again?” I hope that you are well and that you have weathered the storm safely with your sanity intact. As you know, the middle school has been the emergency shelter for the district and it has been great to see how the community has rallied to support each other during this second power outage over the course of the past few months.   In anticipation of school resuming on Monday, we are looking to return to a normal schedule free from disruptions to the learning process. Teachers will take time with their students upon their return to review where they are in the curriculum and to inform them of any changes to when any assignments will be due. Teams will make every effort to ensure that any upcoming tests, quizzes or projects are spread out to allow students the opportunity to put their best effort into their work.   Based upon the school cancellation for this week, we have adjusted our school calendar and the marking periods for the remainder of the school year.  Our new last day of school is Thursday, June 21st.  Please refer to Dr. Palmer’s blog on the district website for additional information regarding the district calendar for the school year. The end of the first trimester has been extended to Tuesday, December 6th. As always, you will be able to view your child’s performance on the Portal. Report cards will be mailed to you by the end of that week.   On Tuesday, November 8th, the middle school will be the polling center for Election Day with voting taking place in the Old Gym. School is anticipated to be open and all students are expected to report for a normal day. The hallway along the Old Gym will be closed to students during the course of the day and reserved for voters entering and exiting the building. We have made appropriate arrangements for additional staff members to be stationed in our hallways. The parking lot behind the cafeteria will be reserved for voters. We will use our normal drop-off and pick-up procedures behind the cafeteria if you choose to drive your child. If at all possible, we would appreciate car-pooling efforts or having your child taking the bus on this day to minimize traffic behind the school.   This is a busy time of the year with various school events taking place. The seventh grade social, originally scheduled for tomorrow evening, has been postponed to Friday, November 18 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the middle school cafeteria. The eighth grade “Challenge” event will be held on Friday, November 11 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the middle school. It is not too late for eighth graders to sign up. All families are invited to Weston Family Fun Night at the Bridgeport Sound Tigers game on December 3rd. Please see the attached newsletter for more details.   In addition, the WMS PTO is inviting middle school parents to a presentation on November 11th at 9:15 a.m. regarding the AIM Initiative (Academic Innovation and Measurement) delivered by Assistant Superintendent Tom Scarice.   The meeting will be held at Weston High School, but is geared toward both middle school and high school parents to provide you with an update on the AIM initiative and what it means for your child’s progression through secondary school. It would be great to see you there if you can make it.   It is our goal to get back to a sense of normalcy once school resumes. Our teachers are eager to have your students back in school, as I am sure you are eager to send them to us.   Sincerely,   Kenneth Craw  Kenneth Craw, Ed. D. Principal
