Natural Selection
2
Genetic Variation a measure of how much individuals in a population differ genetically A population that has high genetic variation will have many individuals with different sets of traits. Sharks: over 400 species Can you think of any other species?
3
Vocabulary Natural selection Genetic variation adaptation
Selective breeding Mutation
4
Vocabulary: Artificial breeding: the process by which humans use animal breeding and plant breeding to selectively develop particular phenotypic traits by choosing which typically animal or plant males or females will sexually reproduce and have offsprings together. Endangered species: A species at risk of extinction because of human activity. Natural extinction: the ongoing extinction of individual species due to environmental or ecological factors such as climate change or competitive disadvantage. Mimicry:the close external resemblance of an animal or plant[or part of one] to another animal, plant,or inanimate object. Camouflage- to make things blend in with other natural surroundings

Adaptation and Evolution
6
What’s Help Animals Survive
Write a brief Report: 5-8 sentences as a group of 3 What’s your animal name? What’s its adaptations and environmental factors? What’s interesting about your animal? Share with class
7
Why are Species (plant and animal) Endangered?
Is the world a safe place for all animals and plants? Why or why not? What does it mean for a species to be endangered? What, if anything, do you know about this topic? What animal or plant species do you know of that are endangered or extinct? Why do you think species are endangered? How do you think or feel about this ongoing global problem? What, if anything, happens when an animal or plant species becomes extinct? How do you think this situation can be realistically improved? Why should it be improved?
8
Why are Species (plant and animal) Endangered?
Booming human population growth over the last two centuries reducing the amount of forest cover increasing the amount and variety of chemicals released into the atmosphere (pollution) Climate Change intensive farming habitat loss is accounting for almost 75 percent of the extinctions occurring now. Rate of extinction should be about 5 per year Now it’s 10,000 99% of current extinction due to Human factors
9
Do Now Change the following sentence as many times as you can by replacing letter or whole words: THE CAT IS RED.
10
What are Mutations? From the song, write down what is a mutation.
11
Mutation creates diversity and variation in species
Change in DNA “Errors” during DNA replication GGT becomes GTT Code for making amino acids and proteins genotype or phenoytpe Chromosome or genes Passed on to offsprings Causes Environmental agent (Mutagen) Radiation, drugs Spontaneous (Mutagenesis)
12
Homework: Choose 2 words to make “Word Map:” definition, picture, example, write your own sentence; make a Word Cloud

14
Environmental Factors
which traits are favorable and which are unfavorable choose an environment anywhere in the world; make a list of traits that would help an organism survive in that environment: animals in Antarctica need to be able to stay warm with heavy, thick fur
15
Speciation forming a new species as a result of evolution
when part of a population becomes separated from the rest each population may evolve with different set of traits- the groups’ adaptations (favorable traits) will differ if the groups are reunited but cannot interbreed anymore, they have undergone reproductive isolation
16
Extinction describes a species that has died out completely
if environmental conditions change, a species may not be able to survive List some conditions?
17
Exit Ticket Are zoos valuable at preserving species?
