7 Point of View

8 Omniscient Viewpoint—
The author tells the story in third person and “knows all.” We know what the characters feel and think. Most versatile *Hint: If we know the thoughts, and feelings of more than one character, the piece is written from the omniscient viewpoint.

9 Omniscient He wished them good night, and they said no more; but Frodo could see in the lantern-light that the man was still eyeing them curiously. He was glad to hear the gate clang behind them, and they rode forward. He wondered why the man was so suspicious, and whether any one had been asking for news of a party of hobbits. Could it have been Gandalf? He might have arrived, while they were delayed in the Forest and the Downs. But there was something in the look and the voice of the gatekeeper that made him uneasy. The man stared after the hobbits for a moment, and then he went back to his house. As soon as his back was turned, a dark figure climbed quickly in over the gate and melted into the shadows of the village street (pg. 148) The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

10 Limited-Omniscient Viewpoint
The narrator only “gets inside” one character, usually the central character. This character functions as the narrator at times. 3rd person and most intimate viewpoint

11 Limited Omniscient Harry had taken up his place at wizard school, where he and his scar were famous ...but now the school year was over, and he was back with the Dursleys for the summer, back to being treated like a dog that had rolled in something smelly. The Dursleys hadn't even remembered that today happened to be Harry's twelfth birthday. Of course, his hopes hadn't been high?

12 First-Person viewpoint
The author actually becomes one of the characters. Everything is seen from one person’s viewpoint.

13 First Person “It was times like these when I thought my father, who hated guns and had never been to any wars, was the bravest man who ever lived.” - To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
