2 4 keys to Effective word choice
Avoid unnecessary adjectives and adverbs Use specific words Avoid technical words and jargon Choose words that sound natural

3 Pick the right word When using homophones you need to make sure you use the correct one. There, their, they’re Accept, except To, two, too

4 Weak and strong sentences
Be specific Don’t use slang or jargon/ #, yolo, swag (etc.) Don’t be confusing Don’t use run-on sentences Make sure your grammar and punctuation is correct Use correct information

5 Make it simple Use average words Not too basic or too complex
If you have to look it up, don’t use it Ex: acquaint (inform), adhere (stick), manifest (show)

6 Natural v.s unnatural Use words that sound natural Use precise words
Ex: necessitate (require), modification (to change), per se (as such)

7 Wordy v.s concise Make sentences more simple
Don’t use extra/ unneeded words Don’t use to many words Ex: in light of the fact that (since), in the event that (if), attach together (attach)

8 Wrap it up Don’t try to sound smarter by using more/ more difficult words Sound basic yet sophisticated I hope you paid attention because we have a jeopardy game for you!
