They were sending thousands of troops close
To disputed areas along the border.
Polk secretly wanted a war to take California,
So he was actually happy about this and ordered
The army to get ready.

Grande and attack US troops.
*May 11, 1846—President Polk asks Congress to
Declare war, they agree. Mostly Southern leaders
Vote YES. Many notherners, including Abraham
Lincoln, vote NO. (Sectionalism)
*June, 1846—Bear Flag republic founded by
Settlers in California, including some of Mexican
background. The US army arrives to back them up
and expel Mexican troops.

Taylor defeats 20,000 Mexican troops with only 5,000
men at The Battle of Buena Vista. Future leaders Robert
E. Lee, future president U.S. Grant, and Confederate
President Jefferson Davis are in his army.
*February, 1847—General Winfield Scott lands at
Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico with 8,500 men.
*September, 1847—Scott and his men take
Mexico City.
*February, 1848—War ends with the Treaty of Guadalupe
Hidalgo. Mexico surrenders large area of what is now the
Southwestern U.S.
