Guided Practice, Scavenger Hunt 23 Writing Linear Equations Notes

4 Warm-Up Identify the slope and y-intercept of the following linear functions: f(x) = 3x – 1 r(x) = 2 – x y(x) = 1/3 x

5 Great Wall of China, Huairou, China

6 Learning Intention/Success Criteria
LI: We are learning how to write equations using a point and a slope SC: I know how to 1. substitute numbers into equations 2. use the order of operations to solve 3. write equations in slope intercept form 4. identify m, x, y, and b values 5. solve multi step equations for a variable

7 Today’s Vocabulary Slope
A number which is used to indicate the steepness of a line Indicates if the line is tilted uphill or downhill Indicated by the letter “m” Point The pair of numbers giving the location on the coordinate plane Written in the form: (x, y)

8 Today’s Vocabulary Y-Intercept
The point at which the function crosses the y-axis Indicated by the letter “b” Slope Intercept Form A way of writing an equation with a slope and y-intercept Written: f(x) = mx + b

9 Example 1: Use slope-intercept form to write a linear equation m = 3 f(-1) = 2
y = mx + b SC4 m: x: y: 3 -1 2 SC1 2 = (3)(-1) + b SC2 SC5 2 = -3 + b + 3 + 3 _____________ 5 = b SC1 SC3 y = 3x + 5 x y

10 Guided Practice 1 Use slope-intercept form to write a linear equation g(x) has a slope of -4 and g(-1) = 3 A] g(x) = -4x – 1 B] g(x) = -4x + 3 C] g(x) = -4x + 1 D] g(x) = -4x – 3

11 Guided Practice 1 Use slope-intercept form to write a linear equation g(x) has a slope of -4 and g(-1) = 3 g(x) = mx + b 3 = (-4)(-1) + b 3 = 4 + b g(x) = -4x – 1 -4 _____________ -4 -1 = b

12 Guided Practice 2 Use slope-intercept form to write a linear equation h(x) has a slope of ½ and goes through (2, 3) A] h(x) = ½ x + 2 B] h(x) = ½ x + 3 C] h(x) = ½ x + ½ D] h(x) = ½ x

13 Guided Practice 1 Use slope-intercept form to write a linear equation h(x) has a slope of ½ and goes through (2, 3) h(x) = mx + b 3 = ( ½ )(2) + b 3 = 1 + b h(x) = ½ x + 2 -1 -1 _____________ 2 = b
