Written in story-telling format
Could begin “Once upon a time . .” Telling actions / findings To properly “tell” story / write story - take notes - never rely on memory Report comes from notes - accurate / complete - soon as possible

Notes as a memory aide Refresh memory while writing
Assist further investigation Contain all the particulars: - measurements - location of evidence - witnesses / suspects / etc. - clothing descriptions / vehicle descriptions - items difficult to remember

Reports are written in chronological order
Documenting your actions Tell reader exactly what you did Arrival - what you did / time Contact with victim / witness Crime scene search

The Report Headings - insure continuity - coordinate the report
- easier reading for reader - assist officer in court to locate items Use headings you want (department policy) Keep in mind who reads reports - reflects on you / your department - influences defense attorneys
