MODULE 4. THREE BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT Reviewing AMERICAN GOVERNMENT

2 LEARNING TARGET 14 Compare the powers and responsibilities of each branch of government as they pertain to law and public policy. The U.S. Constitution establishes roles for each of the three branches of government related to law and public policy. It assigns each branch special powers and responsibilities.

3 LAW AND PUBLIC POLICY laws - rules recognized as binding and enforced by a government public policy - institutional actions and procedures pursued by a government in carrying out its functions

4 LEGISLATIVE BRANCH makes laws through Congressional legislation
establishes public policy through: conducting oversight investigations instituting impeachment proceedings approving treaties passing resolutions

5 EXECUTIVE BRANCH enforces laws establishes public policy through:
making rules and regulations proposing the federal budget recognizing foreign nations issuing executive orders

6 JUDICIAL BRANCH interprets laws as it resolves disputes under the laws
establishes public policy through: issuing writs of certiorari - orders a lower court to deliver its record in a case so that the higher court may review it establishing judicial procedures sentencing offenders accepting amicus curiae briefs - person or group who is not a party to a lawsuit, but has a strong interest in the matter, will petition the court for permission to submit a brief
