Cells Retakes! Homework: Homework Packet 5 Due Friday
Warm up: Write down 3 things you already know about DNA Flush: What kind of pets do you have or want? Cells Retakes! Homework: Homework Packet 5 Due Friday
2
Agenda DNA discovery quick read DNA intro DNA paper models

DNA: deoxyribose nucleic acid
DNA is a very important molecule that is present in all living things and contains the instructions to make proteins DNA is an example of a nucleic acid In each of your cells there is about 6 feet of DNA (WOW!) Today we will learn about the structure of DNA and how it replicates
4
DNA Quick Read The discovery of DNA is actually quite a dramatic story
Read and annotate both sources and answer the questions on the back individually! After your entire group is done, share your answers with your group We will then come back together as a class to discuss our thoughts on the sources.
5
Group discussion questions
Why didn’t she get credit for her work? Would this still happen today?

DNA Intro Notes Paper Model
7
Paper Models The shapes on each help you (i.e a star will be glued to a star) One strand of DNA molecule should have the phosphate at the bottom and sugar at the top The other strand should be the opposite (phosphate at top, sugar at bottom)meaning some will be upside down and that’s okay You make up the specific sequence of DNA you want DO NOT GLUE!!!! (part 2 is when you will glue) NEED: 10 Deoxyribose sugars, 10 phosphates, a total of 20 bases (you can determine how many of each)

Paper Model Examples
9
If one side of DNA has the sequence ATGCCACG, what is the sequence of the other side?
Homework: HP #5- read, annotate, answer reading questions Test corrections: any day before school
10
DNA Coloring Worksheet
Complete the DNA coloring worksheet as a review of nucleic acids and DNA Structure
11
DNA Structure and Replication
Work as a TEAM on this packet That means, each person is on the same question and the exact same time MINUS 1 point if I see that your team isn’t in the same place PLUS 1 point if I hear or see great teamwork!
