Line as Value Drawing several thin lines close together is called HATCHING. From a distance these will merge together optically to give the impression of a shadow. Depending on the pressure of the hand and the quality of the line you can produce areas that appear lighter or darker. These differences are referred to as value. More variation can be achieved by superimposing lines are right angles to the initial hatched lines to form CROSS HATCHING.
