The oil industry is the main source of organic compounds for these processes, but it does not yield the required proportions of desired compounds. Therefore, organic chemists typically have to convert compounds from one form into another, usually working with a readily available starting material and organizing several reactions in a sequence so that the product of one reaction is the reactant of the next.
The series of discrete steps involved is known as a synthetic route.

In this process, the desired product, known as the target molecule, is the starting point of the plan. By studying the functional groups of the target molecule, the substance from which the target molecule can be formed can be determined; this substance is known as a precursor.
Each precursor then becomes the target molecule in the next step, eventually reaching the starting material.
