Title: Nations and Nationalism Be ready in 2 minutes

2 Nation, Country, State A State is a single political community under one government. A Country is either a State or the land occupied by a Nation. A Nation is the group of people who politically associate with that country and each other.

3 The United States of America
Country = America Nation = Americans

4 What is a Nation? A Nation is a group of people that identify with each other over a set of shared common traits: Culture History Language Territory Ethnicity Religion

5 Nation vs. Ethnic Group Nationality and ethnicity are not the same. They are, however, very similar. Nationality is more formal. It is about who you associate with as a political body. Ethnicity is more about your background—which biological group you descend from.

6 How is a Nation Constructed?
A nation is formed when a group of people recognize a shared connection or “bond” This is generally done by a combination of different bonds. Not every nation has the same bonds. Nation Culture History Language Territory Ethnicity Religion

7 Example: Japan The Japanese nation is tightly defined and uses all bonds in defining its nation. Religion is not particularly important. Nation Culture History Language Territory Ethnicity Religion

8 Example: Jewish Unlike Japan, Jewish people are not defined by territory or language. Culture, history, and religion form the bases of the Jewish nation Nation Culture History Ethnicity Religion

9 Example: America Unlike the Japanese or Jewish nations, the American nation is not defined by ethnicity. Nation Culture History Language Territory

11 Nationalism Nationalism is a belief that:
Your nation should rule itself. Your nation should have full control of its traditional homeland. Your nation should be strong and act in its own interests. People of your nation should be devoted to the nation.

12 Nationalism Nationalism generally has 2 goals:
Unite and strengthen your nation Remove all foreign influences

13 Nationalism Nationalism tended to have 3 good effects:
Uniting nations into one nation-state Splitting up empires into many nation states Encouraging democracies

14 Nationalism Nationalism also has a dark side.
Forced assimilation of minority cultures Encouraging war between nations

15 Nationalism Nationalism also has a dark side.
Encouraging Dictatorships Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing

16 Assignment: We will be reading a set of primary documents.
Your job is to read the document and explain why that is an example of nationalism. You will also be asked another question for each document that is aimed towards how nationalism affects people and society.
