2 Washington State API Hepatitis B Task Force Since 1997, to lower the prevalence of hepatitis B in API communities in Washington State by promoting awareness of, screening for, immunization against, and treatment of this deadly disease. Supported by the state Department of Health and WithinReach; network of community partners includes: Community based organizations and foundations Community clinics and health departments Healthcare providers and concerned individuals Three workgroups, supported by the Steering Committee: Community Outreach Provider Outreach Teen/Young Adults Outreach

3 Washington State API Hepatitis B Task Force Various Past and Present Activities: Developed linguistically appropriate and culturally sensitive materials to educate API populations about hepatitis B; Developed and air provider interviews (Cantonese & Mandarin) on AAT Television (multicultural channel); Placed articles in public health newsletters, state medical organization publications, and national publications. Conducted presentations to schools, professional organizations, API communities.

5 Interior Bus Signs – Description Educational Media Campaign funded by Roche Pharmaceuticals Message: Every 30 seconds, hepatitis B takes a life. Get tested. Get vaccinated. Relevant message for repeats. Not time sensitive. Cambodian, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese Community collaborative project

6 Washington State API Hepatitis B Task Force Interior Bus Signs – Implementation 100 buses through Seattle-King Countys International District and Little Saigon; 50 buses through Tacoma-Pierce Countys International District Run schedule: Monday, Sept 18-Sun, Oct 15 (nonprofit)

7 Washington State API Hepatitis B Task Force Interior Bus Signs – Outcomes/Results Monitor 1-800 # calls Ask at upcoming hepatitis B screening via questionnaires

8 Washington State API Hepatitis B Task Force Interior Bus Signs – Challenges Difficult to evaluate Translations vary by individuals and communities Even at nonprofit rates, only sufficient dollars to run signs for 1 month (28-day cycle)

9 Washington State API Hepatitis B Task Force Interior Bus Signs – Future Plans Convert into poster/flyer size for distribution, postings Seek additional funding for next years run – freshen up photos Run in other predominantly API neighborhoods in Seattle, other WA counties (expansion beyond Seattle-King County effort)
