1954- A British archaeologist looked around central Nigeria in search for artifacts Came upon over 200 terracotta artifacts through purchase and his own excavations Artifacts were just outside a present-day village called Nok, which the civ. is named after Possibly 1st complex civilization in West Africa

Made tools for farming and weapons for hunting Tools were also produced for trade

Depicting animals as well as people Nok figures’ distinguishing characteristics: Elongated face with flaring nostrils and protruding lips The artifacts are sometimes positioned with head or chin on their knees
