What is a verb? A verb is a word that expresses action or a state of being An action verb expresses either physical or mental action Examples: run, jump, sing, lift, eat, draw, remember, consider, think What is transitive verb? A transitive verb is an action verb that expresses an action directed toward a person or thing named in the sentence. Example: Michaela swung the golf club. The action expressed by a transitive verb passes from the doer-the subject (Michaela)- to the receiver of the action (golf club). Words that receive the action of a transitive verb are called what? objects

Intransitive Verbs What is an intransitive verb?
An intransitive verb expresses action (or tells something about the subject) without passing the action from a subject to an object. Examples: Sophia and Alex whistled loudly. The hungry cat meowed.

Linking Verbs What is a linking verb?
A linking verb serves as a link between two words. To be a linking verb, the verb must be followed by a noun or a pronoun that names the subject, or by an adjective that describes the subject. Examples: The best team is not the New York Yankees. (noun) The winner of the lottery is she. (pronoun) The young girl is crazy. (adjective)

Verb Phrases What is a verb phrase?
A verb phrase consists of a main verb preceded by at least one helping verb (also called an auxiliary verb). Examples: Diego and Julia are singing a duet this afternoon. Robert and Caprice will be dancing in the competition. Do you think that Mr. Vezina is really over forty?
