SDCL Future is Now Wiki: Guiding Staff Towards Our New Vision
Polly Cipparrone, Training & Web Services Manager San Diego County Library May 6, 2009
2
What is the SDCL Future is Now Wiki?
A virtual means for the RFID implementation team to connect staff with resources to inform, shape, train staff for SDCL’s post RFID and marketplace future.
3
Why This Wiki for SDCL? Reduce miscommunications about project and changes among staff. Central repository for information. Sometimes information does not filter down to all staff. Provide anonymous, trusted mechanism for staff questions and dialog during these changes. Enable ability to ask the questions they might be afraid to ask their supervisor specifically. Inform staff about successes at pioneering library systems who have preceded us. Provide resources for staff to help in developing and implementing these changes in their branches. Share SDCL branch pilots work in shaping service changes.
4
A Resource for All of Us Staff—photo idea: waitress; drive-up photo
5
How did we get here? Reassessed Need for Original Eureka Project
Conceived & Developed New Project Introduced and Launched to Staff Talked with SDCL management and supervisors. Listened to what questions were. Considered my strengths within the organization and how I might be of service to furthering Admin’s goals. Eureka “strategic” thinking – leading from any position.
6

Provides staff ability to question what is being presented; discussed. Helps staff to “find a reason” to participate in Social Networks”
9
What did we receive along the way?
Barriers – myself: risks of switching projects: “should do” core competencies; “committed to” doing original Decider – could justify need for wiki more than the core competencies Flexibility – the right project at wrong time – we’re in a new world order Unexpected benefits – way to get staff’s feet wet into other technologies – real world uses of, reasons to become interested in wikis Expected Issues – requires tending and creativity to help keep the wiki in others’ minds
10
The Road Ahead… Strategically “Advertise” Wiki content
Wiki-only project announcements Staff Contests Contributors Representing other “voices” in SDCL s, newletters Solicit for content from other staff Talking with Staff to Encourage Comments Participation on Wiki
11
What’s in it for you? Trained, informed staff
Central information source for information about the project. Staff feedback/surveys; informal discussions. Staff participation Management referencing the wiki and/or promoting it to other interested project managers.
12
What’s in it for us within the community?
