Bus topology refers to a single cable that connects all the work stations, servers, printers and other devices on the network. The cable runs from one device to another by using tee connectors that plug into the network adapter cards. It is a mostly used in Local Area Networks (LANs).

A bus network is a network topology in which nodes are connected in a daisy chain by a linear sequence of buses.

Linear Bus A linear bus topology consists of a main run of cable with a terminator at each end. All nodes (file server, workstations, and peripherals) are connected to the linear cable.

Advantages and Disadvantages Advantages Easy to connect a computer or peripheral to a linear bus Requires less cable length than a star topology It works well for small networks. Disadvantages Entire network shuts down if there is a break in the main cable Terminators are required at both ends of the backbone cable Difficult to identify the problem if the entire network shuts down Not meant to be used as a stand-alone solution in a large building It is slow when more devices are added into the network.

This requires little physical cabling and is ideal for smaller networks looking to run on a cheaper budget, making this a popular choice for primary schools.
