Diabetes
3
Diabetes Target: I will be able to distinguish between the different types of diabetes and describe how to treat them Diabetes Mellitus: A group of diseases, all characterized by high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Pg.69
4
How a Body Uses Glucose 1. Carbohydrates you eat are broken down into sugar to give your body energy to live 2. To get into the cell, glucose needs insulin 3. The pancreas receives a signal and secretes insulin which carries the glucose from the blood into cells
6
Pancreas: Organ that secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine and hormones, including insulin, into the blood Insulin: Hormone required by body cells for the immediate use and storage of glucose
7
Types of Diabetes Type 1: (insulin dependent)- Diabetes in which the pancreas cannot make insulin causing the inability for glucose to enter cells The immune system attacks and destroys normal insulin making cells of the pancreas; so it is unable to function This causes blood sugar levels become permanently elevated
8
Treatment: Daily blood sugar monitoring and insulin injections, carefully monitored diet and exercise levels
9
Type 2: (non-insulin dependent)- Diabetes in which the pancreas does not make enough insulin or the body is unable to use insulin correctly. Controllable risk factors include: weight, dietary choices, physical activity, sleep patterns, and stress Treatment: Lifestyle changes- Weight loss, regular exercise, nutritional foods (whole grains, high-fiber, fish) If you don’t manage type 2 diabetes it will irreversibly change into type 1
11
Gestational Diabetes: A state of high blood glucose levels during pregnancy.
May disappear after pregnancy, but a higher risk of developing type 2 Can lead to birth complications Treatments: Daily blood sugar monitoring, healthy diet, exercise
12
Complications and/or poorly controlled diabetes can lead to: heart disease, kidney diseases, amputations, blindness, and diabetic coma which results from a state of high blood acidity (ketoacidosis). Summary
13
Diabetes Trifecta Divide your page into 3 sections (or put down 3 post it notes)- label them Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes In each section draw 1 picture to help you remember what’s important about this type Then write the treatments below *Use a minimum of 4 colors* Pg. 68
