2. Why did they cross the Atlantic Ocean?
Came to America to escape the religious persecution from the church and king.
Were seeking religious freedom from the church of England.
Puritans are protestants but were very strict and conservative. Wanted to be an example to others.

3. What were the Beliefs of Puritans?
Believes in the “concept of sin”: Adam and Eve fell, therefore everyone is born into sin.
Believe that God saves who he wants to, only a few are selected.
Jesus dies for the chosen people not everyone.

4. What is Predestination?
The doctrine that God alone chooses who is saved.
God alone chooses but does not look into or recognize what you do.
Puritan people are very cautious of what they do because they want to be selected but it doesn’t depend or matter if you do something right or wrong.

5. Who were the Puritans?
Group of people who grew dissatisfied in the church of England.
Worked towards social, religious, moral, and societal reforms.
During the 1500s they began a religious movement that lasted into the first half of the 1600.

6. Puritan life: Education
Education was a very important part of puritan life
Free schooling was offered to all children
Children were warned about the dangers of the world
Grammar children were quizzed on the material they learned inside and outside of school

7. Puritan life: Recreation
the Puritans were allowed to play games as long as they were not ungodly, un reasonable, or unproductive
Games that required mental concentration were preferred
Sports were acceptable as long as gambling was not involved

8. Puritan life: Family Families were big and parents were strict
Children were expected to act like adults
Girls were expected to tend the house and boys were expected to work as apprentices
They did not have parties, dance, or listen to music
They did not celebrate holidays , not even Christmas an Easter
