Reproductive system
2
Function of the reproductive system
Reproduction – creating offspring Continuation of a species relies on this system
3
Types of reproduction Sexual asexual
4
Asexual reproduction Only involves one parent
Growth of an embryo or seed can grow without fertilization of a male Sharks, water fleas, aphids, fish, bacteria
6
Sexual reproduction Involves both the eggs by the female and sperm by the male The egg and sperm join together during fertilization to produce a zygote, embryo, seed Both plants (angiosperms) and animals reproduce this way
7
Sex cells (sperm and egg cells)
Contain Chromosomes Only cell in the body that does not contain a nucleus
9
chromosomes carry the genetic information that controls inherited characteristics Eye color blood type 23 chromosomes in each type of sex cell (sperm and egg) Zygote that is produced in fertilization will have 46 chromosomes which is needed for life
10
feMale reproductive system
Designed to carry out several functions Produce eggs (female reproductive cells) necessary for reproduction Conception Pregnancy If pregnancy does not occur it is designed to menstruate Produce female sex hormones that maintain the reproductive cycle
12
Male reproductive system
Designed to carry out several functions Produce, maintain, and transport sperm (male reproductive cell) and protective fluid (semen) Produce and secrete male sex hormones responsible for maintaining the male reproductive system
14
fertilization Can be both internal and external
Reptiles and birds end with a shell Kangaroo has special pouch Higher animals inside the womb Internal the male sex cell fertilizes the female sex cells External the sex cells meet outside the body
