Practical suggestions for improvements in the MSc thesis supervision process Uusi-Kyyny Petri (CHEM), Minav Tatiana (ENG), Duan Ruifeng (ELEC) Aalto level: Environmental support Provide easy-to-find materials for Master thesis Supervision Process for staff and students Improve material (cross-check with other school’s material) Do co-operational development between schools Create a check list for kick-off meetings Create an electric check list for Master Supervision Process (dedicated to single student) Make easy available help: for thesis writing and psychological help Create a concrete examples of text & structures: how grades looks like (for transparency of grading) Collaborate with immigration office to finish the degree, for instance, the students have a longer period, e.g. one year (currently 6 months), to look for jobs; the students need to complete their thesis before receiving work permit Maybe informative promotional video’s about the M.Sc. Thesis work would be of interest for the students and staff? Student: independent work Supervisor: Scientific support Ask for help for practical issues Ask transparency of grading – what is needed for a specific grade Ask for feedback Have time for working on Master thesis (time commitment) Ask for Supervisors time commitment Start writing M.Sc immediately Discuss with supervisor often Remember M.Sc is independent work but it is advised for you to ask for help/guidance Follow check list Make time commitment (book calendar appointment) Keep a kick-off meeting Tell exactly expectations about work Give a constructive and informative feedback continuously Be fair and honest about grading Conclusion: Each party needs to play own role seriously to ensure a successful thesis and graduation in time. Different parties should have borderless cooperation and understanding of each other’s goals.
