1 Visual Aids

2 Revision What does INTROSH stand for?
What are the three phases of an effective lesson? What is the process for the consolidation phase?

3 Objectives By the end of this presentation you will be able to:
Describe a poor slide Describe an effective slide

4 Scope & Handout This will lesson will last until NAAFI
There is no handout so you will need to take notes!

5 Slides What is the purpose of a slide? To pass on information
To prompt the instructor To get the attention of the students Provide visual stimulation to associate with words

6 What makes a bad slide? Text difficult to read Upper & Lower case
Too much text Misleading arrows Poor use of colour Poor use of effects (powerpoint)

7 Example… If all the lesson slides were done in a nice fancy font and in size 14 then there would be more chance of plaiting fog than any of you reading this without squinting!

8 Example… SOMETIMES it is useful to HIGHLIGHT SOME WORDS within a block of TEXT to make them stand OUT. However, THIS CAN also be extremely DISTRACTING if CApitiliSAtion is used!

9 Example….. Today’s lesson is going to be looking at the use of visual aids within a theory lesson. This session will cover the aspects of a good slide but also highlight some of the aspects of a bad slide and why they should be avoided. It is important to listen carefully as soon you will be teaching the other cadets and as such you will need to be able to design appropriate visual aids!

10 Example…. River Forest Route County Boundary

11 Example… Make sure that the text colour you use doesn’t clash with the background colour of your presentation!

12 Example… Effects Are Good But Don’t Overdo It

13 What makes a good slide? To the point Clear and understandables
Easy to read Not overcrowded KISS

14 Example… Short sentences That are easy to read
Bullet points to jog memory!

15 Objectives By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
Describe a poor slide Describe an effective slide

16 Summary Slides need to be clear, concise, to the point and not over crowded. Don’t cram everything on to the slide, it is there as a pointer, not a text to read from!

17 Questions Any Questions?

18 Looking forward… Next session will be: Revision of ACP 42
