Humanistic Approach Developed in the 1960’s/1970’s as an alternative to some of the other psychological approaches Key psychologists are Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers The main assumptions are: We have ‘free will’ Capable of making choices Individuals strive to be the best they possibly can

Abraham Maslow Hierarchy of Needs
Individual strive to be the best they possibly can To achieve this they need to work up a number of stages A person must complete the first stage before they progress to the next Whether a person progresses up the pyramid depends on circumstances

Rogers – Development of the Self
Actual self – The person who you actually are Ideal self – The person you feel you should be and want to be If the ideal self is too unrealistic or very different to actual self person feels like a failure
