The Ottomans established a Muslim empire that combined many cultures and lasted for more than 600 years

Enlarged the country through alliances & war
Osman's son becomes sultan

Improved the lives of the peasants
Non-muslims did not have to serve in army, just pay exemption with small tax

Could stop trade between Ottomans in Asia & Balkans

Led attack on the city
Fired cannon at the wall - 26 foot gun - fires 1,200 pound boulders

7. Constantinople Chain kept ships out of the harbor
Dragged 70 ships over a hill
Attacked the city on 2 sides
Take 7 weeks for the city to fall
Now called Istanbul

Customary for the new sultan to have brothers strangled
