4 "LORD, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am. Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Selah "And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You. (Psalms 39:4-5, 7 NKJV)

5 Today, possible enemies of contentment
1 Timothy 6:6-8 NKJV Context of verses 6-8 Today, possible enemies of contentment Expectations Failed promises Experiences, observations Options 1. Our expectations a. often set in childhood: - I expect to have what my parents had, gave me, or did not give me - on how many occasions do children expect to be given gifts? Is that how the world works? b. by society: - I expect to have what people around me have - Our society says “Aim for the moon, you can do or have whatever you set your mind to.” Is this true? c. our desires/dreams: 2. Failed promises of others: family, Christians, co-workers, government/law-makers, fellow-citizens 3. Our experiences and observations- what we are used to (pay, extra benefits, bonus, promotion) or what we see is common for others. 4. Because so many things are accessible to us and people around us, we can struggle to be content

6 Contentment Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:6-8 NKJV Now godliness with contentment is great gain. What is the appeal of “gain?” a. more choices: am I prepared for more choices? how am I handling current choices? Prodigal son, Phari d. status: Rom. 12:16-17 e. solutions: it also creates problems f. opportunity for more loss More Choices Status Independence Solutions More. . . Attention

7 Contentment Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:6-8 NKJV Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.

8 Do you understand “true riches, great gain”?
And he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. (Acts 16:30-33 NKJV)
