T = Thesis Statement **CLAIM
H = Hook the Reader Grab the reader’s attention with an anecdote, reference to history, or a declarative statement (2-3 sentences) Treyvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Gardener. To the average American who keeps tabs on current events, the names of these three men automatically elicit images of police brutality, violence, and bloodshed. AT = Attack the Topic General topic sentences which are more specific than the hook (1-2 sentences) The conundrum of social equality, integration, and harmony has been disputed from the time humans recognized differences among themselves, and endure as core points of argument to this day. Activists for racial equality throughout our nation’s history often revere an image of a heterogeneous, yet harmonious society wherein all people, regardless of race, live with equal opportunity to succeed and prosper as one race: the American race. T = Thesis Statement **CLAIM One statement that establishes your side of the argument. (1 sentence) With relentless headlines full of hateful rhetoric, sputtering politicians, and fervent protestors, it is unfortunate to say that the dream once held dear by Dr. King for a united society has yet to be achieved to this day.
