1 Quick Fire How would you react if a handful of students in EBF High were required to do morning chores cleaning up others’ messes in order to graduate—and you were selected to as one of the lucky few?

2 Lincoln’s Volunteer Army
When the Civil War started, Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to sign up for a three month campaign. The First Battle of Bull Run was not even fought until the three months was over (first major class between the North and South). Afterward, Lincoln extended the call for volunteers to sign up for a three year tour of duty

3 Conscription Act of 1863 Lincoln soon found that not enough volunteers were willing to sign up. In 1863, Congress passed the first conscription act in US history, beginning the draft of US citizens into the military.

4 New York Draft Riots The first draft fell on New York City, because it was not meeting its volunteer quota. The draft fell disproportionately on the young, single, poor, and immigrant populations of the North. Frustration over the draft boiled over in New York, and thousands rioted (primarily Irish and German immigrants) attacking draft officials and killing free black laborers they believed were stealing their jobs.

5 Consider these questions for your character…
What would this person find unfair about the draft? What would this person find fair about the draft? What action might this person taken when hearing about the lottery? What if they were drafted (if applicable) or their husband was drafted?
