Climate change, sustainability and health
“Climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century” The Lancet and University College London Institute for Global Health Commission Now it is time for the health sector to respond to the reality of climate change by taking a moral and tangible leadership role in mitigation efforts around the globe, beginning with its own policies and practices” World Health Organization The health sector has a substantial role to play in both mitigating climate change through the adoption of low-carbon strategies, while also building resilience to climate impact in ways that plan for environmental change and expanded health threats The link between the environment and health has been well recognized globally. The Lancet called climate change the biggest global threat of our time, while WHO pointed out how it affects the social determinates of health. In the Canadian College of Health Leaders joined with other national associations to support the joint position statement “Towards an environmentally responsible Canadian health sector”. It stated “We call on all health care organizations to pledge to minimize the negative impact of their activity on the environment and to seek solutions to existing barriers” Unfortunately, until recently, this call has largely fallen on deaf ears. Key Elements of Low Carbon Healthcare ( Climate Smart Healthcare- World Bank) Health system design and models of care based on appropriate technology, coordinated care, emphasis on local providers, driven by public health needs Building design and construction based on low carbon approaches Investment programs in renewable energy and energy efficiency Waste minimization and sustainable health care waste management Sustainable transport and water consumption policies Low carbon procurement policies for pharmaceuticals, medical devices, food and other products Resilience strategies to withstand extreme weather events

Business continuity: Resiliency & adaptation to climate change Carbon pricing New provincial regulations Clean tech revolution Hospitals have made many advances in energy management, recycling and waste management., but today, there are new drivers that are creating new challenges. These include the need for business continuity in the face of a growing number of extreme weather events, the price on carbon, new regulations and the clean tech revolution

To create an awareness, education and engagement movement for Senior Health Executives, Board Members Medical Staff, Sustainability Leads, Government and Industry to improve environmental stewardship and climate change adaptation in Canadian Health Care facilities and those they influence
