1 Wednesday, February 8 Place these in order from least complex to most complex: red blood cell, dog, heart, circulatory system

2 Plant vs. Animal Cells

3 Although most cells have the same basic stuff, there are some differences between animal cells and plant cells.

4 Plasma Membrane Animal cells and Plant cells both have a plasma membrane used to protect them from the environment. Like a ziplock bag or a balloon around the cell guts.

5 Cytoplasm: fluid that fills the cell
Animal cells and Plant cells both have cytoplasm. It’s the clear, gel-like, watery, goo that is inside the cell membrane and holds the organelles. Mostly water and salt

6 CELL WALL Animal cells do not have a cell wall, only a cell membrane
Plant cells have both a cell wall and a cell membrane, that’s what makes stems rigid, and makes plant cells form rectangular shapes in a brick wall pattern.

7 CHLOROPLASTS Animal cells need to absorb sugar for food, so they do not have chloroplasts. Plant cells make their own food from sunlight, so they have chloroplasts to absorb sunlight.

8 VACUOLES: stores food and water
Animal cells have small vacuoles. Plants need lots of water to conduct photosynthesis, so they need big vacuoles to store lots of water. CENTRAL VACUOLE=90%

9 LYSOSOMES: Get rid of waste
Lysis=destroy Animal cells have to take in food, so they have more waste products to digest, and thus more lysosomes. Plant cells have very little waste, so they have very few lysosomes.

10 Nucleus: Tells the cell what to do
Animal and plant cells both have a nucleus.

11 Mitochondria: power and energy
Animal cells and Plant cells both have mitochondria. Mighty-Chondria!!!!!

12 Golgi Body: packaging and transporting proteins and lipids
Golgi Apparatus, Golgi Complex Animal cells and Plant cells both have a golgi body. FedEx or UPS delivery

13 SHAPE Animal cells are roundish or blob shaped because they have only a membrane on the outside. Plant cells are kinda rectangular because of the shape of the cell wall. They often look like bricks in a brick wall

14 COLOR Animal cells are pink, clear, red, orange, bluish, (anything but green) Plant cells are green or sometimes clear if the cell is part of a root that doesn’t see sunlight.

15 MINI-QUIZ

16 1- What is this organelle?

17 2- What does this organelle do? Hint: mitochondria

18 3- Are these plant cells or animal cells?

19 4- Are these plant cells or animal cells?

20 5- Plant or animal?

21 6- This is the cell membrane. What is its job?

22 7- These are chloroplasts. What do they do?

23 8- Is this a plant cell or an animal cell?

24 9- What is the name of this organelle?

25 10- What is probably inside of this organelle?
