1 Scale Change

2 Minor changes in an equation can stretch graphs vertically or horizontally.

3 If v(x) = kf(x) the function has a vertical scale change with a scale factor of k.

4 This is exactly what happened when we changed the amplitude in trig functions.

5  Multiply by a number.  The graph gets taller.

6 Note: If k is negative, the graph will be turned upside-down.

7 If h(x) =𝑓 𝑥 𝑘 the function has a horizontal scale change with a scale factor of k.

8 This is similar to when we changed the period in trig functions.

9  Put x/# in parentheses.  The graph gets fatter.

10 Note: If you multiply x by a whole number in parentheses, the graph will get thinner.
