1 Sigmund Freud

2 Challenging Existing Norms
Relevance Today View of the id as primarily driven by sexual desire, and his rejection of spiritual aspects to human nature Conservative society is not accepting of such open sexual ideas Greatly advanced understanding of human nature, opened up new questions to psychology. Freud's oppositional view of individual desires (id) and society's needs (superego) has been criticized. Freud's model contains many insights that have led to numerous subsequent advances in psychology. And Freud's take on defense mechanisms still holds relevance. The same can be said for his ideas on transference and catharsis. His ideas appear intriguing and even common sensical but there’s very little empirical evidence to back them up. His research is never used for sources due to the fact that his theories lacked evidence Freud took a new concept called “free associating,” where patients would openly talk about their feelings and experiences regardless of how irrelevant, absurd, or upsetting it sounded. This concept is still used today, patient and doctor relationships have been influenced to work as closely as Freud did with his patients
