Adaptive Control Method for Seismic Response Attenuation Omar A.S. Al-Fahdawi, Luciana R. Barroso, Rachel W. Soares  Zachry Department of Civil Engineering - Texas A&M University TAMU, 199 Spence Street, College Station, Texas, , USA Abstract Adjacent buildings may experience large-scale damage during the earthquakes and strong wind. Pounding between these buildings make them more vulnerable to damage than single buildings. In this study, an adaptive control strategy called the Simple Adaptive Control (SAC) strategy is used to derive the Mageto-rheological (MR) dampers to alleviate the undesired vibrations induced by LA10 earthquake. The obtained results show that the SAC is very effective in mitigating the seismic responses. 1. Introduction During the last decades, earthquake-damage to civil engineering structures revived interest in structural control to alleviate seismic responses. The pounding between adjacent buildings was observed as a major cause of damage during the past severe earthquakes. 2. Simple Adaptive Controller (SAC) The choice of the appropriate control algorithm is one of the challenges of the structural control field. The SAC method is a direct adaptive controller where the gains can be computed directly without the need to identify the system parameters as in the indirect adaptive strategies. This method forces the plant to follow a well-designed model by minimizing the tracking error continuously. 3. Conclusion In this study, the effectiveness of SAC to drive MR dampers for seismic response reduction is investigated. The results show that SAC is effective in mitigating the seismic responses of the coupled structures.
