1 ATOMS The building blocks of matter

2 Warm up Observe the demonstration:
the pot filled with water is on the hot plate. Describe in as much detail as possible what is happening.

3 1.Copy down the table 2.For each statement in the before column, write A for agree or D for disagree.

4 Matter Matter- anything that has mass and takes up space.
If all of the objects you see (and some your can’t, think air) why do they look so different from one another?

5 ATOMS Matter has different properties based on the type of atoms of which it is made. Nearly everything around you (air, water, food, clothes) is made of atoms

6 Breaking into atoms Atoms are made of smaller particles.
The middle or nucleus of an atom is made of protons and neutrons. The outer rings or cloud is made of electrons.

7 Elements Some matter is made of only one type of atom which are called elements.

8

9 Elements are organized
Elements are organized based on their size on the Periodic Table of Elements. Activity: Look at the periodic table of elements. Find elements that are common in your everyday life such as items at home or school. Make a list of those elements and what they are used for. Are some elements more commonly found than others? Infer why many of the elements are not “everyday” or common elements.

10 What happens when atoms combine?
When atoms combine they form different types of matter. Most objects, even you, are built of a combination of atoms.

11 Review Explain how the air the you breathe fits the definition of matter. Describe a substance that is made of a combination of atoms. What everyday items are only made of one type of element. What is the difference between water and gold?
