Civilization means that the Native Americans would become farmers; convert to Christianity; own land; learn English; become Americans Removal was based on the idea that civilization was never going to succeed; only option was to find some place West to settle Natives

Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act of 1830 Cherokee given 2 years to migrate voluntarily; majority did not move 7,000 US troops sent in to force Natives to move west
