Federal Reconstruction: Constitutional Amendments
13th Amendment abolished slavery 14th Amendment citizenship (overturned Dred Scott) 15th Amendment right to vote, can’t deny based on race

Federal Reconstruction: Military Reconstruction Act
divided South into 5 military districts Governed by a general with federal troops Government formed by Southerners loyal to the Union Must include both whites and freedmen Confed. supporters denied the vote

Civil Rights Act of 1866 made black codes illegal by declaring freedmen full citizens with same rights as whites Johnson vetoed Congress overruled (2/3 vote of Congress)

Radical Reconstruction: Southern States Respond
Constitutions constitutions rewritten, most advanced in nation, ended imprisonment for debt, started public schools, right to vote regardless of race, ¼ delegates rewriting const. were AA Governments Republicans in office, 1/5 AA, ratified 14th and 15th Amendments, 1870 all states rejoined Union Political Office 1/5 were AA (22 AA in state Congress)

Social Norms did not change…
Black codes: like previous slave codes laws to limit rights of freedmen help planters find work by limiting job opportunities for freedmen Keep freedmen at the bottom of the social order. Sharecropping: freedmen rented land, tools, homes, clothes, etc. from plantation owners payment was made at harvest time relied on honesty by plantation owners (most freedmen lacked education)

Radical Reconstruction: Unwelcome by Southern Democrats
scalawags – White Southerners who voted Republican after the Civil War carpetbaggers – Northerners who moved South after the war to get money and political power
