What is the Mexican Independence Era about?
This era deals with efforts of Mexico to populate and retain Texas from the formation of the Republic of Mexico in 1821 through the Texas Revolution in This includes the development of Anglo and Mexican settlement, the establishment of local government institutions, and the events that led to the Texas Revolution

Why did Mexico want Independence from Spain?
Wanted equal rights between the Spanish, Criollos (Mexican Citizens) and Native Americans Wanted their land back that Spain took from them Wanted freedom to live their own life The new Spanish rule from the inspector was hurting the economy by forcing towns to close and move

Who is Father Miguel Hidalgo?
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was a Mexican Catholic priest. On September 16, 1810, Father Hidalgo rang the church bell to announce revolution against the Spanish. Indians and mestizos marched with Hidalgo and captured major cities but were halted at the gates of the capital. Hidalgo fled north but was caught and shot in 1811

The constitution written after Mexico’s independence from Spain The republic took the name of United Mexican States, and was defined as a representative federal republic with Catholicism as the official religion. Who was José Bernardo Gutíerrez de Lara and why is he important?
Wanted Texas to be involved in the fight for independence, went to Washington D.C. and asked for help but was denied due to U.S. alliance with Spain. Gutierrez-Magee Expedition – José Bernardo Gutiérrez (follower of Father Hidalgo) and Augustus Magee (former U.S. soldier) organized the Republic of the north and proclaimed Texas independent of Spain, but were defeated. It encouraged others to free Texas and Mexico from Spanish rule.

French pirate who helped fight against the Spanish Fleet in the Gulf of Mexico Kept the cargo that the Mexican army did not want and made a profit Galveston was a prime location to set up his base to fight against the Spanish

Who was James Long and why is he important? Why did Jean Lafitte say no to James Long? A filibuster who wanted to fight the Spanish in Texas so he can claim Texas as his own. Asked Jean Lafitte to joins his small army but was turned down since by Lafitte. Lafitte said they did not know how to fight large troops and too small. Lafitte predicted Long’s death by the Spanish

Law that set up guidelines to the colonization of Coahuila y Texas Allowed Stephen F. Austin and other empresarios to receive land grants in Texas Allowed the Americans to introduce Slavery

Who was Stephen F. Austin and why is he important?
First American to recruit and settle Americans in Texas/Mexico. He settled 300 families and was known as an empresario. This led to the colonization of other American settlers in Texas/Mexico

Who was Martin de Leon and why is he important?
a Mexican empresario who settled 200 Mexican families in South Texas (between the Lavaca and Guadalupe River). He and his wife founded the town of Victoria in 1824. Received privileges from the Mexican government because he was a Mexican Empresario

Who was Green DeWitt and why is he important?
Was an important American empresario who settled 166 families in the area near present-day Gonzales Did not meet contract because the Mexican government started to limit the number of people settling in Texas.

Going over the Test Look over your test and with a colored pen or pencil rate the questions 1: very easy 2: easy 3: somewhat hard 4: hard 5: Difficult Think about why you rank the questions the way you did Discuss with your partner the questions that were a 1 and 5

Going over the Test Be prepared to share your reasoning with the teacher Let’s discuss and look at the questions together We will work through some of the questions using our test taking strategies
