Not only because of the Olympics this month but because this Chinese proverb expresses what I believe the outcomes will be for us today—some will have an awareness of library initiatives, others will become involved in promoting these initiatives. Each of us can recognize opportunities and embrace challenges to promote library services.

990 papers; 11,765 downloads Houston, we have contact with the Graduate Studies Office… 29 theses 33 series, representing over 200 authors 2 electronic journals The International Journal of Exercise Science is one of the big successes for TS downloads and for student engagement. Sometimes outcomes in our Library lives are huge, but not so important at other levels. Nevertheless, this journal by Scott Lyons and James Navalta is into its 3rd issue. Their site has their most popular papers and they have designations for student authors and faculty contributors. The Journal of Outdoor Recreation Education and Leadership is coming. Raymond Poff is technology manager and is marketing it through 2 professional associations on a subscription model basis, which is possible through TS. Remember TS is a publishing platform as well as a repository.

SelectedWorks™ at WKU Uploads research in one place for TopSCHOLAR™ and SelectedWorks™ with library support Presents and preserves works in a clean, concise, and consistent manner across SelectedWorks sites and at WKU Gives students the ability to identify and link to faculty research. Posts and shares your scholarship as part of syndication with ResearchNow Organizes work by document type or subjects Highlights your specializations Through the TopSCHOLAR™ Management Committee and discussions with the dean and the former marketing coord., we have a plan and focus to market SW in the very near future and have already tapped some early advocates for the “gallery”

Allows full-text indexing in Google for increased visibility as
priority hits in a search. Provides a simple URL: as a default. Enables links to departmental and personal web pages. Resolves copyright issues and infringements through library support. SelectedWorks means that you can access your site anywhere, anytime, archive your work, and personalize your site. Do it yourself at or let us jumpstart you by ing Most important is the students’ ability to see professors works in full-text, not just as citations on a resume Also, faculty become part of a larger ResearchNow network at works.bepress.com and can generate interest (and invitations to interview or serve as experts) through their subjects or areas of specialization

While this is a screen shot showing the enhancements, we will go live a bit later and see how SW fits into this repository. When I presented on a panel at NASIG earlier this summer with the President of bepress, he said the enhancement was based on the Golden Triangle of design.

Strategies and Focus TopSCHOLAR™
Make personal contacts Identify top-level scholars for early adoption. Send letters based on lists and specific areas Schedule follow-up appointments after distribution Make personal contacts. Identify top-level scholars for early adoption. Prepare a list for Library Faculty and the Dean to contact. Send a letter to the Centers staffs with positive comments about their efforts and promote these University and Library-based initiatives. Identify key programs like Folk Studies, print Journalism, gifted studies, recombinant genetics, etc., as another checklist for contacting faculty. If need further focus, arrange appointments with directors of Institutes, Centers, and department heads. Monitor progress with all of the initiatives. Incorporated e-theses into the Graduate Studies thesis guidelines. Monitor progress with number of uploads. Continue to promote TopSCHOLAR™ as a publishing platform by highlighting current e-journals and their success, not only for journals but also for conference proceedings, working papers, and previously unpublished works.
24
The Opportunity, The Challenge
TopSCHOLAR™ is a repository of intellectual efforts, as well as a publishing platform. Much more can be captured in terms of conference proceedings, working papers, presentations, grant-funded projects, etc. SelectedWorks™offers faculty the oh-so-simple option of a professional web site for research endeavors without using a “big red” button. It is that simple. Our challenge: promote, discuss, build.

“The process, the outcomes, and especially the passion of discovery enhance the meaning of the effort and of the institution itself.” Charles E. Glassick et al., Scholarship Assessed (San Francisco : Jossey-Bass, 1997), p.9.
