5. The Iran-Iraq War
Feeling threatened by the revolution in Iran, and wanting control of an oil rich province, Iraq invades.
The war lasts 8 years, with the U.S. giving support to Iraq, which was under the leadership of Saddam Hussein.
Iraq uses chemical weapons against Iran, which resorts to human wave attacks.

6. The War of the Cities
1985 – Unable to make headway against Iran’s infantry, Iraq bombs major cities in Iran over and over.
Civilian casualties are extremely high, as the Scud missiles struck civilian residences, schools, mosques, and commercial aircraft.
In 1988 the war finally ends and leaves borders as they had been before the war.
