Over the course of Texas history, historians have divided the past into several eras. These eras are….. Natural Texas and its people (Prehistory-1528) Spanish Colonial ( ) Mexican National ( ) Revolution and republic ( ) Early state hood ( ) Civil war and reconstruction ( ) Cattle, Cotton and Railroads ( ) Age of oil ( ) Texas in the Great Depression and Worl War II ( ) Civil Rights and Conservatism ( ) Contemporary Texas (1980-present)

Why do historians divide the past into eras?
Historians divide the past into eras in order to examine how political, economic, geographic and social patterns change over time.

Indian Tribes and Location of the tribes
Coastal Plains – Karankawas, Coahuiltecans, Atakapans Southeastern- Caddoes, Wichitas Plains- Commanches, Apaches Pueblos- Jumanos, Tiguas

Gulf Coast Indians- nomadic hunters and gatherers.
Karankawa – Southeast, used dugout canoes to fish and hunt small animals. Cabeza de Vaca wrote about Karankawas.

Who is Cabeza De Vaca??? He was a Spanish explorer of the New World. He is a notable historian who documented his accounts of the American Indian tribes he encountered.

The Plains Indians Nomadic, dependants on the buffalo, and were fierce warriors

Comanche Indians Used every part of the buffalo Lived in Tipis
Domesticated animals before horses were introduced to the new world by Europeans

Apache Indians Used buffalo hide as protection from the harsh landscape. For part of the year they lived in farming communities along rivers and streams called Rancherias.

Kiowa Indians Recorded oral history through their tipis.

Puebloan Indians Sedentary, farmers, and lived in houses made of Adobe

Tigua Indians Tigua- known for their beautiful pottery.

Jumano Indians Jumano- farmed, hunted, traded and lived in houses made of adobe.

Southeastern Texas Indians
Sedentary food-rich environments and complex social systems.

Caddo Indians Built dome shaped huts
Organized government system led by a chief Women played important roles Greeted Europeans with the word “Tejas”, which meaned friends

Wichita Indians Hunted buffalo, grew crops, and known for tattoos around their eyes known as “raccoon eyes”.
