Room 23 April 18-21, 2017 Language Arts We started a new theme, “Rights and Responsibilities.” Throughout this theme, we will talk about how people and animals should be treated. We listened to the story Mighty Jackie: The Strike-Out Queen. With this story, we practiced the comprehension strategy, synthesize, and listened for important details to help us retell the story. We also read, A Play for All: a story about a class play. Next week, we will practice acting out! Our vocabulary words this week are: equal, talent, believe Word Study This week learned and practiced with words that have r-controlled vowels. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words. We reviewed our new word wall words. car, far, for, flower, water, burn Please practice these at home! Please make sure you are reviewing our phonics skills at home. Spelling is becoming much harder for some students. Important Dates: May 3rd: Field trip to Philadelphia Zoo! Alternates for the week:
Social Studies While studying Africa, we learned that it is not a country, but a continent! We read, “Africa is NOT a Country,” and learned about some information about each of the 53 countries in Africa. We also learned and colored the flags of Kenya and Nigeria. Science In science, we distinguished non-living things from living things. Students wrote about their own living thing. We also started learning about seeds. We planted seeds in the courtyard and are excited to watch our seeds grow! We started an experiment and are testing to see if plants can grow without sunlight and water, without sunlight but with water, with sunlight but without water, or with both sunlight and water. We will be making observations throughout the unit! Math We completed chapters 13/17 and started chapter 15: Calendar and Time. In this chapter, students will learn how to use and read a calendar and how to tell time to the hour and half hour. This week we practiced how to read and use a calendar. Next week, we will start learning how to tell time!
