The root and stem of the plant lead to the veins inside the leaf. The veins contain: - xylem = water + minerals from the root to the rest of the plant (e.g. leaves) - Phloem = transports sugars from the leaves (where they are made) to growing and storage tissues.

Collect tile and hand lens Cut off 1 cm from the end. Using a hand lens look inside the celery. Draw a diagram of the inside of the celery. Colour the parts where you can see the dye. The dye water is carried in tiny tubes called xylem. See worksheet ‘Water transport in celery’

Transport of water in plants!!
Celery Experiment!! Water is absorbed from the soil into the roots of a plant. Water travels through long, thin tubes running up from the roots through the stems and leaves called xylem. Water moves up the xylem through a process called capillary action. When plants have more water in their leaves than they need, they get rid of this extra water through a process called transpiration. During transpiration, water evaporates from holes in the surfaces of leaves into the air.

What is transpiration??

What is transpiration? Transpiration is caused by the evaporation and diffusion of water from inside the leaves. This creates a shortage of water in the leaf, so more water is drawn up through the xylem vessels to replace it. This means more water is being drawn up from the roots, causing a constant transpiration stream of water through the plant.

What is transpiration? Transpiration is a side effect of the way leaves are adapted for photosynthesis. - Stomata: gas exchange - As there is more water inside the plant than in the air outside, the water escapes from the leaves through the stomata. Transpiration stream does provide a constant supply of water for photosynthesis.

Why do plants need water?
Water is needed by plants for photosynthesis but this important liquid is also used in many other ways: to provide dissolved minerals that keep the plants healthy; to transport substances around the plant; to keep the plant rigid and upright; to keep the plant cool; to allow other chemical reactions to occur in plant cells. What happens to a plant if it does not get enough water?
