We are going to look at a narrative account broken down to show you how to write a good one. The story of getting a detention I woke up late. I got a puncture in the tyre of my bicycle. I arrived late. I was given a detention.

I woke up late because my alarm had failed to go off. Then I got a puncture in the tyre of my bicycle. Therefore I had to stop to fix it, worsening the problem. Subsequently I arrived late which led to me missing my valuable history lesson. As a result I was given a detention, because I had to make up the lesson afterschool.

Write your own narrative account of the key events that led to something in your life, or you have made up. Look at the exemplar to show what is expected by the examiners. You will need to do the following three things: In chronological order Use the language of sequence, e.g. then, after that, next, subsequently, Use the ANALYTICAL language of sequence. This means words that explain why the sequence occurred. E.g. because, as a result of this, consequently, therefore,. E.G. Write a narrative account analysing the key events that led to my arrival at school this morning. Now you are going to do write another narrative account but this time on the historic events we have been studying. Write a narrative account analysing the events that led to the building of the settlement of Santo Domingo from 10th October 1492 – 1946. In the exam you will be given two events and need to think of a third yourself. However today we are giving you lots of events to chose from. Columbus’ arrival in the New World The shipwreck of the Santa Maria The building of La Navidad Columbus’ return to Spain The destruction of La Navidad The building of Isabella The abandoning of Isabella Columbus’ departure to Jamaica Columbus’ handing of power to his brother Bartolome The building of Santo Domingo

Exemplar paragraph: [POINT] One key event that led to the building of Santo Domingo was Columbus’ arrival in the New World. [EVIDENCE] On the 10th October 1492 Columbus’ ship sighted land. Columbus landed on the shore of San Salvador the next day, 11th October, and he claimed the land for Isabella, Ferdinand and for Spain. [EXPLAIN] This led to the building of Santo Domingo as it was the first claim of the Spanish to the New World. This meant that the Spanish thought they had the right to settle in the New World and build setttelments there. Therefore this led to the building of La Navidad and the initial establishment of Spanish settlements in the New World. [LINK] This led to the building of Isabella as La Navidad was destroyed.

The account of events shows some analysis of the linkage between them, but some passages of the narrative may lack coherence and organisation. Accurate and relevant information is added, showing some knowledge and understanding of the events. Maximum 4 marks for answers that do not go beyond aspects prompted by the stimulus points. 3 6-8 A narrative is given which organises material into a clear sequence of events leading to an outcome. The account of events analyses the linkage between them and is coherent and logically structured. Accurate and relevant information is included, showing good knowledge and understanding of the key features or characteristics of the events.
