It was the start of winter.

They believed that ghosts, witches and evil spirits returned on that night.

They wore frightening costumes and…

What did the 2 colours represent for the Celts?
Black represented winter and long nights.
Orange represented the harvest.
What did the Druids believe about black cats?
They believed that black cats had special powers.
So they have become a symbol for Halloween.

The Church decided to call the 1st of November « All Saints’ day » or « All Hallows’ day ».
So what about the 31st of October?
The 31st of October was « All Hallows’ eve ».
It became « Halloween ».
