1 Multiplication Grids Multiplying a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number.

2 Our questions says: 23 x 5 = ? Today we are going to use the grid method to help us work out our answer, so firstly you will need to draw a grid like this on your whiteboard.

3 23 = 20 + 3 Now look at your question again. 23 x 5 = ?
Lets partition the number larger number to make it easier for us to work out the answer. 23 =

4 You are now going to transfer all the information we have onto the grid.
x 5 Firstly, where am I going to put the x sign? 20 Next, where am I going to put my single digit? 3 Finally, where am I going to write my partitioned number?

5 x 5 20 100 15 3 = 115 Now I am going to work out my answer.
Firstly, times the digit on the top row by one of the numbers at the side. Write the answer on the grid. x 5 20 100 15 Repeat for the other number. 3 = 115 Finally, add these two new numbers together.

6 Have a go at these yourself.
27 x 4 = ? x 3 = ? X = 108 X = 108
