NARRATIVE, DESIGN, AND PERFORMANCE
3 BaSIC CONCEPTS NARRATIVE, DESIGN, AND PERFORMANCE
2
Narrative Sequence of events told in a significant way
Story: chronological sequence of events in a narrative Plot: Pattern or sequence of events in a narrative
3
Design The way in which the game is told through visuals and game play
Mechanics: How you play: jumping versus shooting, e.g. What are the rules of the game? In-game environment: mise-en-scene and sound User interface: What are you playing on?
4
Performance The role of the player
Physical: How ‘good’ are you at playing the game in terms of the speed of your fingers? Twine games do not have much because you have to be a hacker. Cognitive: (or emotional) The way in which the game makes the play ‘feel’; what decisions do you have to make? Strategic objectives: an objective that we need to do to succeed or finish the game. It can be narrative strategies (get the best story out of it) or goal focused.
