3.3 Photosynthesis
2
POINT > Define photosynthesis POINT > Define autotroph and heterotroph (again) POINT > Show the equation for photosynthesis POINT > Describe the role of chlorophyll and stomata POINT > Describe 2 stages of photosynthesis
3
POINT > Define photosynthesis
Photosynthesis: the process by which cells capture light energy and use it to make sugars (glucose) Almost all living things obtain their energy directly or indirectly from the sun
4
POINT > Define autotroph and heterotroph (again)
Autotroph: an organism that makes its own food Plants, some protists, and some bacteria are autotrophs
5
POINT > Define autotroph and heterotroph (again)
Heterotroph: an organism that cannot make its own food Heterotrophs must get energy from other organisms animals fungi some protists some bacteria
6
CHECK: What is an autotroph? What is photosynthesis? What is a heterotroph? What is diffusion?
7
POINT > Show the equation for photosynthesis
During photosynthesis, autotrophs use light energy to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose Oxygen is produced as a waste product 6CO2 + 6H2O C6H12O O2 CO2 and H2O are reactants C6H12O6 and O2 are products
8
POINT > Describe the role of chlorophyll and stomata
Chlorophyll is the green pigment in chloroplasts that absorbs light energy
9
CHECK: What are the products of photosynthesis? What is chlorophyll? What are the reactants of photosynthesis? Where in the cell is chlorophyll?
10
POINT > Describe the role of chlorophyll and stomata
Stomata are tiny openings in the leaf CO2 enters the plant through stomata and diffuses into the chloroplasts O2 leaves through the stomata H2O also leaves through stomata (H2O enters the plant through the roots)
11
POINT > Describe 2 stages of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis happens in two stages Stage 1. The light reactions: Chlorophyll captures light energy and uses it to split a water molecule, releasing oxygen (O2) Stage 2. The Calvin cycle: Energy from the light reactions is used to make glucose (C6H12O6 ) using carbon dioxide (CO2 )
12
POINT > Describe 2 stages of photosynthesis
13
POINT > Describe 2 stages of photosynthesis
14
CHECK: What happens during the light reactions of photosynthesis (Stage 1)? What are stomata? What happens during the Calvin cycle (Stage 2)?
