Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
Usually have a 1:2:1 ratio. (1 carbon: 2 hydrogen: 1 oxygen) CH2O Carbohydrates are also known as sugars and starches.

Carbohydrates There are two types of sugar:
Simple – one or two monomers Animals use simple sugars for immediate energy. Plants make and use simple sugars for immediate energy. Typically end with -0se. Examples: glucose, sucrose, fructose, galactose, lactose, etc. These look like one or two carbon rings.

Carbohydrates Complex – more than two simple sugars linked together; used for storage. Animals store simple sugars in long chains called “glycogen” for future use. Plants store simple sugars in long chains called “starch” for future use and long chains called “cellulose” for structural support. Examples: glycogen, starch, cellulose These look like chains of carbon rings.

Carbohydrates When organisms have extra simple sugars and need to store that energy, they put the simple sugars together using dehydration synthesis to make complex carbohydrates. When organisms need to use their stored energy, hydrolysis breaks the chains back down into simple sugars.
