Gothic architecture (left)
The stone supports on the outside of these churches allowed for huge stain glass windows. Elegant spiral ceilings carried eyes upward to heaven. Portraits in stained glass conveyed stories from the Bible. Romanesque architecture (right) Built like fortresses with thick walls and towers. Heavy roofs meant very few windows, so these churches were dimly lit.
