2 Substituting Terminology
Some academic organizations are not comfortable with the use of business terminology. The term used isn’t important but the definition is. They can substitute: Customer for User Stakeholder for Partner Competitor (no change) and Supplier for Affiliates

3 # 3- Define Inputs Customers Stakeholders What does our Institution produce, why and for whom? Individuals and organizations can fit into multiple categories depending on their role Competitors Supplie rs

4 # 3- Define Inputs: Customers?
Customers: An actual or potential end user of the Institution’s products, program’s or services Examples: Students Colleges Units

5 #3- Define Inputs: Stakeholders?
Stakeholders: someone or an organization who can help the planning effort succeed or fail – who has information you need, or resources for problem solving Examples: Faculty/Staff/Administration Businesses State Government

6 #3- Define Inputs: Competitors?
Competitors: An organization that is striving to outdo your organization by seeking the same resources Examples: Other Universities ISU Units

7 #3- Define Inputs: Suppliers?
Suppliers: Actual or potential partners who can help drive competitive advantage Examples: Other state agencies Software and Hardware Vendors
