Section Focus Rome began on a small river town on the Italian Peninsula. ***Ideal Climate conditions aided in Rome being able to grow a variety of crops*** Quickly grew to become the most dominate empire on Earth.

Geography of Italy It all began on a “boot” shaped peninsula.
land was covered in mountains and hills. Few rivers flowed from mountains into the countryside. Mild climate and weather allowed for widespread farming and a variety of crops.

Legendary Origins Rome’s origins are a mystery.
Believed to have begun with Aeneas. Feeling Trojan hero, who settled in Italy. Allied with native group, the Latins. Began line of Italian rulers. Actual city began by twin brothers; Romulus and Remus...who were a couple of wolf puppies….

Legendary Origins Twins were descendants of Aeneas.
Believed father was the god Mars. (war) Were to be sacrificed in a river, but were saved by a wolf. Once grown, honored wolf by building city on Tiber river. Romulus killed Remus over leadership, and began Rome.

Rome’s Early Kings Romulus took throne in 753 B.C.
Etruscans, from northern Italy, overthrew Roman kings. ****Etruscans contributed lots to the Romans: Temples (the arch) The number system The Alphabet Loved Bull leaping and high dive pools and gladiator fights…no joke lets browse some pics Etruscans were cruel and were overthrown by Nobles, who began a new government.

The Early Republic Nobles began the Republic government.
A Republic allows the citizens to vote for leaders who represent them. Supposed to keep one person from becoming too powerful. However, elected officials usually came from rich minority.

The Early Republic Common people of Rome, Plebeians, wanted changes and some control. Rich nobles, Patricians, feared the Plebeians and a revolt. The Republic was becoming very corrupt and fragile.
